Written Communication

There are many types of written communication including letters, emails, flyers, blogs, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.  A lot of the time, written communication is the main form of communication between you and your friends, family and business associates/clients. As such, shouldn’t you take the time to make sure that what you have written says what you want it to say and presents the correct image?

As a parent, I see a lot of letters and newsletters sent to me in respect of events which my son is invited to be a part of.  It never ceases to amaze me the number of basic grammatical errors which are found in these letters and newsletters, especially those written by students who are arranging events for the children who attend SNAPPY to take part in.  I received one such letter from the organisers of an event which is being held in a couple of weeks inviting my son to take part and the most glaring error was the use of “you’re” instead of “your” when referring to my child.

The most common errors which I find are as follows:

Your – belongs to you and you’re – you are
Hear and here
their, there, they’re
its and it’s

I know that a lot of the time, people are writing how they speak or text and they don’t think about whether or not their spelling or grammar is correct.  I can forgive text speak on Twitter as you only have 140 characters to say what you want to say and I am guilty of using it myself in those instances when I have a lot to say and don’t want to split it over two posts.  However, sometimes I think that the young people writing on Facebook use the alternative spelling or text speak purely to drive people like me round the twist but they do need to be careful that it doesn’t then spill over into their academic and future work lives.

Does incorrect grammar irritate you or have you just learnt (or should that be learned?) to accept it?  Have I made any glaring errors in this blog?  I’m sure I have (it doesn’t flow as well as I’d like) so do let me know.

Social Media Seminar

I went to a seminar at Yorkshire County Cricket Ground on 24 November 2011 regarding social media for business.  Now, I have been on Twitter and Facebook for a while as an individual and even set up a business Twitter account as well as registered on LinkedIn but never really used them.  I also have a couple of personal blogs which I use for topics which are of interest to me such as health and fitness, holidays and other random things.  However, I don’t really know how to use them for business.

The seminar I went to was an introduction to social media which while I knew a lot of the stuff which was covered I certainly picked up a couple of tips.  I mean, I’d never heard of Google Alert (which reminds me I must do something about using that in the next couple of days).  Shaa Wasmund, the presenter, was great and had some great anecdotal stories to tell to get her point across.  I came out with some great ideas which I could see would work great for my husband’s business, I’m just not sure how to apply them to my own – yet!  I wish I could have booked on the afternoon seminar too but it was fully booked by the time I found out about it so I hope that Business Link Yorkshire get Shaa back up to Yorkshire soon.

So, here I am setting up a “business” blog which I hope I will use and not leave sitting idle.  I have set up a Facebook business page too but am not sure how to make the most of it.  I have also set up a Twitter account for my husband’s business (Teach-2-Drive) as I feel that he is missing out on opportunities by not being out there.  I also have lots of blog ideas for him, especially at this time of year – driving in snow, driving in fog, road safety, winter sun… and the list goes on.  After 26 years in the driver training industry, he truly is an expert in his field and, although he is still learning (we never stop do we?), he has such a depth of knowledge I think he should share some of it with the world.  Watch this space, he will have a blog soon even if I have to type it myself!
